IELTS or PTE? Choosing the Right English Test for Study Abroad in 2026

One of the first practical decisions every study-abroad applicant faces is which English proficiency test to take. IELTS and PTE Academic are both widely accepted, but they suit different kinds of test-takers — and picking the wrong one can cost you time and confidence. Here's how to decide.

How the Tests Differ IELTS is a paper-based or computer-delivered test with a human-graded speaking interview, conducted face-to-face or over video call. PTE Academic is fully computer-based and entirely machine-scored, including the speaking section, which is recorded and evaluated by an algorithm. This single difference shapes almost everything else about which test suits you.

Choose IELTS if: You're more comfortable speaking to a real person than to a microphone. You want handwriting practice for the Academic Writing Task. You're applying to a university or immigration authority that has a stated preference for IELTS specifically — some UK and Canadian institutions still do. You have more time to prepare and want access to a very large pool of established prep material.

Choose PTE if: You want results faster — PTE typically returns scores within 48 hours, compared to IELTS's 5-13 days. You prefer typing over handwriting. You're comfortable with a fast-paced, computer-driven test format. You're applying to Australia, New Zealand, or increasing numbers of UK and Canadian institutions, all of which now widely accept PTE.

What Actually Matters More Than the Test Regardless of which test you choose, universities and visa authorities care about the score, not the test format. Before committing, check your specific target university's minimum band or score requirement, and confirm your destination country's visa authority accepts that test for immigration purposes (not just academic admission) — this varies by country and occasionally by visa category.

Our Recommendation If you're targeting the UK or Canada and want maximum flexibility, IELTS remains the safer default. If your target is Australia, or you need results quickly because of a tight application deadline, PTE is usually the better call. Life Consultants can review your specific university shortlist and tell you exactly which test — and which score — you need before you spend money on registration.
